If you are incapacitated in Arizona and do not have a health care power of attorney, doctors must follow the default decision-maker order under A.R.S. § 36-3231 before providing treatment.
In this video, I walk through the statutory hierarchy, including when a spouse, adult child, parent, domestic partner, sibling, or even a close friend may be contacted to give consent. I also explain the limits of that system and why it may not reflect your actual preferences.
