A trust is like a bucket. It only works if you put your assets inside it, your home, your bank accounts, your investment and retirement accounts. If you sign your trust and never transfer anything into it, there’s nothing for the trust to control, and your family can still end up in probate, which is the exact thing you were trying to avoid.
In this video I break down what funding your trust actually means, why an unfunded trust can be as useless as no plan at all, how assets get into a trust (retitling, transfer-on-death, and beneficiary designations), and the two steps to take if you set up a trust years ago and never finished funding it.
